My interest in New Orleans began in high school. My first trip was in October of 2004 for Voodoo Fest in City Park. I quickly loved the Oak trees throughout New Orleans, the French Quarter, the people, etc. In August of 2005, I stayed awake the entire night watching the news as Hurricane Katrina hit, immediately researching work groups I could travel with to help. By May of 2010, I had traveled down an additional 5 times with my church to help rebuild throughout greater New Orleans, working in the 7th ward, 9th ward, Treme, Bayou St. John, Lakeview, and so on. The work that we did varied from cleaning out & stripping houses that were destroyed, gathering salvageable items for the families, to eventually more standard rebuilding work: tiling, spackling, painting, laying down grass, etc. Even in 2007-2008, we were able to see the water levels from the storm, some of which were higher than 5 feet. In many of the photos here, you can see the 'X' markings made on the houses, which designated the date the house was reached, where the rescue team was from, which hazards were in the home, and how many dead were found. These photos are from all of my trips, in chronological order.
